Until last Tuesday, T & K International Hotel, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos State, was a place where fun seekers visit to drink and satisfy their sexual desires.
But the death of a customer, popularly known as Jereke, who passed the night at the brothel on the fateful day has changed the fortune of the place.
The prostitutes and customers have deserted the place and the brothel has been shut by the police.
As the news of the sad incident filtered in the neighbourhood, scores of people have been converging on the brothel to discuss the issue.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Jereke was a commercial bus driver, plying Iyana Ipaja – Igando Road and a regular caller at the brothel.
It was gathered that on the fateful day, the driver, after the day’s work had gone to the brothel to unwind.
It was further learnt that Jereke having had some booze, reportedly slept in the brothel.
Although it could not be ascertained if he slept with any of the prostitutes that night, it was learnt that he died in the brothel.
A resident, who craved anonymity for fear that he might be identified, said neighbours were awoken by a noise from the place in the early hours of Tuesday.
He said, “When we asked what the noise was all about, we were told that a customer died in the brothel.
“When we went in, we saw the deceased in a pool of blood. Blood gushed out of his mouth. It looked as if he was poisoned.”
He said the deceased was popular in the area because he was a frequent visitor to the brothel.
“That Tuesday morning, some people came to carry his corpse out of the hotel. His body was covered with blood. I do not know where they took him to,” he added.
A trader on the street, who also declined to give his name, said he might have been poisoned by one of the prostitutes, who probably capitalised on his state of stupour.
“The man went in there after working for the day. Mark you, the man was a driver. He must have come into the brothel with all the money he made for the day. Those prostitutes cannot be trusted; he could have been poisoned to collect the money on him,” he said.
But another resident, who gave her name simply as Uchenna, said the victim had a room in the hotel and that he died inside the room.
“Many tongues have been wagging that he died during sex with a prostitute but that is not true.
“On the fateful day, up till 8am, his room was still locked. They knocked at his door, no response before the door was forced open. When the door was opened, it was noticed that he had died.
“The man lived in Iyana Oba. It is when he could not go home that he would sleep in the brothel.”
When our correspondent passed through the place on Thursday, it was noticed that the brothel had been deserted and under lock and key.
The Divisional Police Officer, Gowon Estate Police Station, Mr. Agba Nchor, was repeatedly called on the phone but he did not pick. He also did not reply to the text message sent to his phone.
Also, the spokesperson for the Police Command in the state, Ngozi Braide, did not answer her call. Two text messages sent to her phone were not responded to as of press time.
